Curtains!

In a rare outburst of spring cleaning fever, I decided to wash the lounge curtains and, while I was at it spruce up the paintwork of the glorious edwardian bay window - a job I had been meaning to do for a while. However, when we took down the curtain many of the hooks broke, as over the years they had become brittle.  Replacements were purchased and the day dawned when I got round to rehanging the curtains.  It is important to note that the hooks are more complicated than the simple curly hooks I am familiar with...  I duly attached the hooks to the curtains, taking care to space them evenly.  I kept two back in case there were any further fatalities during the rehanging process.

I examined the hooks carefully as I wanted to apply as little pressure as possible to reduce the risk of further losses.  As I looked at the hooks I pondered - should I try and fit them over the top first and then ease over the lower edge, or the other way round?  Climbing on a chair I attempted to fit the first hook.  PINGGGG!   It did not fit obediently on to the rail.  Oh no!  Instead it flew in a graceful arc and disappeared behind the china cabinet.  Things were not going to plan! This should have been a task that took a few minutes!  Further attempts to fit a hook on to the curtain rail were equally unsuccessful.  I came to the conclusion that there must be a secret to fitting curtain hooks on curtain rails, and at this moment in time I had absolutely no idea what that secret was.

I paused to seek advice from my Facebook buddies, and opinion appeared divided between whether the top or bottom of the hook should be fitted first - was this a north/south divide I wondered?  I sincerely hoped it wasn't, as I was situated in the Midlands! Meanwhile, I was getting nowhere, and my sense of domestic disillusionment was growing - I mean how hard can it be to hang a pair of curtains!!!
Perhaps I should have merely attached the hooks to the rail and then attached the curtains... Arghhh!

My husband was out, so I left the job until he returned, tagging him on Facebook to warn him of my failure.  At this rate we would be taking the curtain rail down just to rehang the curtains!

After he returned, my husband went to investigate the curtain situation. He looked at the curtain and observed..."No wonder you couldn't hang them, you have the hooks on upside down!" So THAT was the secret!  In just a few moments he turned all the hooks the other way up, and hung the curtains - I could hear the hooks popping obediently on to the track....

Did I ever tell you that I really am not very practical...?

Ah well, like a song every story needs a hook - and this one has plenty...
