Heralding Herod and Remembering Larry Norman

Advent Sunday

The KHT was rehearsing the Old Testament passage  prior to the service this morning in a surprisingly hostile tone.
The reading was from Isaiah 2:1-5 using The Message.
"The day is coming..."
she growled threateningly
"when the mountain of God's house will be the mountain..."
She paused to glare at an imaginary congregation.
I must have looked surprised as she stopped reading to explain.
"Well, he was a baddie!"
"Who was a baddie?" I enquired.
"Herod"
The penny dropped.
"It's not Herod. I asked if you could read it 'like a herald',
someone announcing good news..."
A look of comphrehension dawned upon her face.Off she went again,
"The day is coming.." she began triumphantly.

I am glad we got that sorted before we totally confused the  congregation!

We moved on to the New Testament passage uncomforting words from Matthew, warning us to be on our guard. When we have this particuar passage read in church, it reminds me of the song by Larry Norman 'I wish we'd All Been Ready', so I think of it as Larry Norman Sunday.
However, much as I love this song, we have Worship for Everyone on the first Sunday, so we can save that particular song for another year.

Meanwhile I am going to try and read a chapter of Luke's gospel each day during Advent.
So far, so good - but it is only day 1...
