Rumours of the arrival of 'the beast from the east' had been circulating on social media for about ten days. Even the BBC had cottoned on to the anticipated weather system, so no-one was surprised when the snow started to fall #isthisthebeastfromtheeast?

On Tuesday we were scheduled to begin a series of after-school clubs. We were half-expecting it to be cancelled, especially after we experienced a mini blizzard about an hour before we were due to start. Fortunately, the sun appeared and much of the snow melted, remaining only in places shielded from the late afternoon sun. Amazingly, all but one of the children were able to be there and a great time was had by all. In the evening we even managed to go ringing at a nearby tower. #thebeastheldoff
Wednesday brought further flurries, but nothing significant enough to prevent me from walking home from work. At this stage, most of the footpaths were still clear. Again, only those which were sheltered had retained their cover of snow. Shortly after I arrived home, the snow began in ernest and was soon settling. We watched the birds take shelter in the hedgerow behind our house. Evening music rehearsal was cancelled. #rarenightinforbothofus
Just before I go to bed I try to take a photo of the snowy garden at night, but my photo is ruined by the red reflections of the clock on the oven. I solve the problem by wedging a towel in the door of the cupboard above the oven, so that it hangs over the cooker clock, thus eliminating those irritating red dots from my photo! #geniushack
I spend the morning rediscovering my desk in the spare room. A task which is essential, but overwhelmingly depressing.
"It's your own fault. You shouldn't be so untidy" says DH sympathetically, not. There speaks someone who is naturally organised and orderly. #weareverydifferent
At a lull in the proceedings Husband took me to work, so at least the paperwork is in place if the baptisms carry on as planned. At 2pm, the roads were fine, especially going uphill. The return journey, just half an hour later, was far more challenging. People were panicking and attempting to pull out instead of waiting for a space in the traffic. I was amazed we reached the traffic light without being rammed! The journey from there onwards was all downhill, literally! Most people were driving as if they had a cargo of eggs on their back seat and were leaving p-l-e-n-t-y of room, to avoid sliding into anyone else. By now the roads were definitely icy and were not going to improve today.
"Music hasn't been cancelled.." says DH, optimistically.
"Imagine what the roads will be like by now. Stay home." To my surprise, DH acquiesces. #anotherunexpectedeveningin
We spend the evening weather watching. Fascinated by the strange sculptural shapes storm Emma produces. I feel as if I am trapped in a poem 'The Wind by Ted Hughes unable to concentrate on anything, preoccupied by the progress of the storm outside and the changing landscape, hidden beneath a shroud of white, which glitters seductively in the darkness. #beautifulbeast
Our thought turn to Saturday. We are due to go to Leicestershire. The towers and table are booked. The weather most definitely was not. I check the locations. All are situated close to main roads, but the weather MUST improve significantly and stay that way if we are to go. It would be a total nightmare if we got freezing rain just as we are about to leave! Emails come in from different parts of the country, as people try to second guess the weather, and fail. #snowedoff?
